The finer and more curl-resistant the hair, the more you want a loose, larger wave rather than tight curls. Winding lots of tight curls on small rods is more than fine hair can carry, so it drops fast; a large-rod wave perm lifts volume from the roots and holds far longer. Because the hair resists curl, we do a pre-treatment first to help the wave form, and since fine hair is fragile, we keep the heat and product to a minimum. A see-through fringe grazing the eyelids then brightens the face. For context: putting a large wave into fine hair makes it look far fuller than the actual density.
③ The results — two volume wave perms
Both are hard to believe as fine hair — the roots have real volume and the wave is full and lovely. The curl size and length differ a little, but the texture of fine hair opened up into a large wave comes out similarly natural. Home care matters most for fine hair: don't dry it all the way — at about 70% dry, scrunch the waves upward with your hands as you finish, and a little volume mousse or essence near the roots keeps it from falling flat. Not pressing the roots down with hot air is the key to keeping the volume.
